JONATHAN PODWIL – PAX AMERICANA
19th October 2018 – Opening h 19:00
The Brooklyn-based artist Jonathan Podwil in his solo show in >RAUMSTATION presents a series of works which are connected with the unprecedented political situation in the United States. The nation is bitterly divided. People who never paid any attention to politics now hang on every detail and development of the Administration, and the ongoing investigation into the 2016 election. There are many parallels in many other Western democracies, but there is a sense that the period of relative peace and stability (at least in the Western Hemisphere) with the United States as its anchor is ending. In the climax of Pax Americana there is a thread between the film of the Kennedy assassination, to the landscape of Vietnam, to symbols of American power such as Air Force One, or American Football players protesting police brutality. All are polarizing images, almost Rorschach tests for one’s political beliefs. But most importantly, there is something in them which inspires the artist to capture and paint them.
